MOAM Podcast 19: Scott Cooke, AKA
"Scotty Chops"

Picture
What do Nickelback, Florida-Georgia Line and Dallas Smith all have in common?  They've all worked with this week's guest.

That's right - I've got one of the guys behind Nickelback on the show! DO YOUR WORST INTERNET!!!

Actually, he's a pretty good guy.  Scott Cooke took his dream of being a musician to the next level, lending his skills as a producer to some of the biggest acts in music today.  In addition to playing bass on the road with Dallas, you'll often find Scott working backstage on his computer, mixing and tweaking new music from some of the biggest stars in music today!

Plus, he REALLY loves his garden.

This is a tremendously fun conversation with a good buddy - I hope you enjoy getting to know Scotty Chops!

MOAM Podcast  18: Jojo Mason/Dan Swinimer

Picture
Music is often an escape for us.  Whether it's playing your favorite song, or even learning to perform it yourself, we all have a way that music makes us  feel.

For JoJo Mason, music found him at a dark time in his life.  This week, you'll meet a man who after having to let a dream go, found himself wondering what was next.  If not for a chance encounter at a Christmas Party he really didn't want to go to, we may have never got to know him - which I think you'll agree would be a huge shame.

I made a new friend during this interview, and for anybody needing a little motivation or inspiration, you NEED to meet JoJo for yourself.

MOAM Podcast 17: Petric and The Aerosmith Saga

Picture
Brothers Jay and Tom have a bit of an unlikely story when it comes to forming their band, "Petric".  Coming out of Manitoba, you'll meet a pair of brothers who while both musical, took very different approaches to their musical career.

That path led them to DALLAS SMITH, who in addition to taking the boys under his wing, is contributing to their success in other ways.

Sit back and meet the boys and get treated to a few acoustic tracks, including the coolest version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" I've ever heard!

Also, it was a nice week off, and it was capped with some tickets to see Aerosmith - something I have tried NUMEROUS times to do in the past... a brief history of Mike vs Actually Seeing and Aerosmith Concert!

MOAM Podcast 16: WWE Hall of Famer, Bushwhacker Luke

Picture
In the late 1980’s/early 1990’s, The Bushwhackers were one of the most popular parts of WWE.  Although they never held a Tag Team championship, their popularity with the fans was epic.  From imitating their unique walk, to even letting these crazy men from New Zealand LICK them, pro wrestling audiences were captivated by this unique duo.

Nowadays, “Cousin Luke”, one half of the Bushwhackers, continues to wrestle at 68, looking pretty much as good as he did back in the day.  The man behind the Bushwhacker is an amazing individual full of stories and wrestling history.

Most inspiring is what keeps him on the road, taking wrestling bookings all over the world, as he celebrates over 50 years doing what he loves.

MOAM Podcast 15: David James

Picture
Sometimes strangers can just click, and I feel that was the case when I got to sit down with new country star David James.  A prairie kid, we sat down and talked about all sorts of things, including music being in his family, and a love of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

David's first single, "What We Weren't Looking For" is on iTunes, but he brought his guitar so we go through that and much more this week!

Also, thoughts on Awards, money, and an amazing letter from a listener.

This week's episode is also available for download on iTunes and Stitcher Radio!

MOAM Podcast 14: Small Town Pistols

Picture
One of the biggest acts to emerge from Canada in the 1990's, The Wilkinsons set records and became globally recognized - with two of the band members not even hitting their 20's.

Now, with father Steve still working with them and cheering them on behind the scenes, Amanda and Tyler Wilkinson have emerged into their own spotlight as Small Town Pistols.

We've shared a special friendship over the years, and during our chat we talk about that and a LOT more in this week's podcast!

We talk about new babies, Brad Pitt movies, social awkwardness, personal space, Bat-Nipples and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!

It's a lot of fun, so sit back and enjoy!

Mike on a Monday is always free, and available on iTunes, Stitcher Radio and on Podbean.

MOAM Podcast 13:
MDM Recordings Founder and President,
Mike Denney

Picture
We all hear about “Record execs”.  Those devious, evil people churning out music for the masses, all in the interest of a quick buck and don’t care if they leave their artists penniless.  You’re about to meet a record label president, and founder, who has a pretty impressive track record, and says that he has all but given up on worrying about making money doing it.

It seems pretty obvious on paper.  A guy works in the music business for a number of years for some of the biggest labels in the world, so he goes off and starts his own label and becomes a huge success… right?  Not quite.  Still, Mike Denney’s story of how he founded and developed MDM Recordings from his basement… to his basement… is pretty incredible.

What you’ll hear is a truly alternate way of thinking that has lead him to backing some of the hottest acts right now in Canadian Country Music, including Chad Brownlee, Bobby Wills, Jess Moskaluke, The Lovelocks, and newcomer David James, among a field of others.

No stone is left unturned in this truly revealing conversation detailing Mike’s walk through the music business.  You’ll hear about the success, the failure, conflict with artists, and so much more.  It’s a tremendous insight into the world on the other side of the music industry.

MOAM Podcast 12:
Victoria Banks and Nashville Songwriters Phil Barton and Emily Shackelton

Picture
Some of the most trusted people in music are the ones that are rarely on the radio.  Victoria Banks is a rare exception to the rule.  The 2010 CCMA Female Vocalist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year has had great success on the air, but you may be surprised to hear what kind of hits she's been behind.  Her friend, Phil Barton and Emily Shackelton are also part of the show.  Find out the LONG list of hits (both Canadian and American) that these 3 have been a part of, including Sara Evans, Chad Brownlee, Autumn Hill, One More Girl, that one Jessica Simpson country song, and you'll even get to hear some of a song that has been recorded by GARTH BROOKS!

Plus, find out how Victoria is tied to the Nashville show, learn how to start a car using a beer can (really), couch surfing, and just how much a royalty cheque looked like before and after the download/iTunes shift!

Mike on a Monday is ALWAYS free and is available for download on iTunes and Stitcher Radio

MOAM Podcast 11:

MOAM Podcast - Episode 10:
Jake Mathews and Scott Chambers

Picture
Back after a hiatus, MOAM weekly podcasts return!

Things have changed a lot for me career wise, all for the good, but it feels great to be doing this again - especially with a couple of friends!

Country artist Jake Mathews is back with new music, and some great stories!

This isn't his first foray into the Mike on a Monday world.  You may remember Jake appearing in my living room after a pretty sad day.  We talk a little about that, but a LOT more about life as a musician, making music a job, songwriting and staying on the road.

Also, a complete surprise, but one of my friends from back home literally showed up on my doorstep.  Share some laughs and songs with Jake Mathews and my buddy Scott Chambers on this week's podcast!

MOAM Podcast - Episode 9:
Tim Hicks w/Exclusive Track Preview,
"Dust & Bone"

Picture
Picture
Picture
Tim Hicks is a self-proclaimed nearly 20-year overnight success.

With hits like "Get By", "Buzz, Buzz, Buzzin" and "Hell Raisin' Good Time", Tim solidified himself as a contender in the world of Canadian Country Music.  Going into the Canadian Country Music Awards in September with some nods, we manage to barely talk about that or his new album, "5:01", which hits stores in August.

We DO find out a LOT about Tim... everything from Giggin' to Golden Girls, this is a super-fun conversation with a guy who has seen and done it all when it comes to being a "working musician", and still has a huge future ahead of him.

Also, as an added Mike on a Monday bonus, you get to hear some of the "pre-order exclusive" single, "Dust and Bone", which you can get if you pre-order his record through iTunes!

MOAM Podcast - Episode 8:
Corb Lund and Bryce Pallister

Picture
If you're a music fan, this is a must listen for you.  Corb Lund is probably the most successful Canadian artist NOT on the radio these days.  With tours all over the world, and a strong following among the rural country audiences across Canada and the US, Corb has carved out a niche that is fiercely loyal and have supported him through the years.

Recently, Corb got the chance to head to Memphis and record in the legendary Sun Records Studios - the same place where Elvis and so many others cut their biggest hits.  Corb tells us about the experience going in, how it got booked, and how his new CD/DVD release came to be.

Next up, one of the most unassuming talents you'll ever meet, until he gets on a stage or in a recording studio.  Bryce Pallister is part rock n' roll, part 1970's, with a twist of Hank and Aldean somewhere in between.  In addition to playing some of his tunes, Mike and Bryce share all sorts of fun stories including playing in a field and all sorts of ridiculousness - It's fun, it's fast, and it's worth checking out now!

MOAM Podcast - Episode 7:
Jim Cressman

Picture
Did you hear about the time Kiss played Dawson Creek, BC?  Who could come up with the idea to take Carrie Underwood to play Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan?

That's our guy this week.

In addition to fostering the "Big Shows in Small Towns" Series, Jim Cressman has elevated himself and his company, Invictus Entertainment to consistently high levels of performance.  Not bad for a guy that was fired from radio.

Now, in addition to booking shows, working with names like Keith Urban, Bob Dylan, Brad Paisley, and with several others on the list or to be added, Jim is continuing to foster and develop the Canadian Country Music scene.

Managing names like George Canyon and Brett Kissel, and being a part of the elevation of Johnny Reid and the return of Terri Clark, Jim's resume speaks for itself.

Of all these things, the thing that impresses Mike the most, is the fact that he and Jim have become and continue to be great friends.

This week, enjoy a peek behind the curtain in a conversation that is inspiring to those who ever wanted to chase a dream, and a must-listen for anyone in the industry.

MOAM Podcast - Episode 6:
The Letterman Story and Part 2 with Sesame Street's Bob McGrath!

Picture
A promise is something that we seem to take for granted these days - and something that few of us expect to hold weight.

This week, I share a story of a promise kept from the David Letterman crew, and Sesame Street's Bob McGrath continues to tell amazing stories from behind the scenes at Sesame Street!

MOAM Podcast - Episode 5 - Sesame Street’s Bob McGrath, Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway and NYC

Picture
It's a New York State of Mind episode, as Mike is joined by his friend (and Broadway expert) Chelsea.  They recount Mike's surprise trip to New York City, meeting Tony Winners Neil Patrick Harris and Lena Hall, and other excitement just two days into the trip.

After that, we cross to the other side of the spectrum with a name and voice from EVERYBODY'S childhood as the legendary Bob McGrath talks all things Sesame Street!  Of course, there are some stories of haircuts and hippies, but Bob dishes on some of the more interesting things behind the scenes, including which US President was DENIED from being a guest star!  All that and more on this week's PACKED Podcast!

MOAM Podcast - Episode 4
Codie Prevost

Picture
Codie Prevost is one of the most well-known artists... in Saskatchewan.  Despite repeated successful outings in his home province, Codie talks to Mike about the challenges of getting noticed elsewhere, and the two dive deep into things like strategy, the recording process, and even... MONEY!

It's an open and refreshing conversation with one of the most talented and nicest guys in the scene... a must listen for anyone in the music business.

In addition to music, Codie and Mike talk about all sorts of things, from antiques, to clocks (maybe too much about clocks), sandwiches and even a robbery at gunpoint!

Also, Mike's heading to New York on almost no notice - to see a childhood hero!

MOAM Podcast - Episode 3 - Tristan Horncastle

Picture
It's Mike on a Holiday Monday - here in Canada anyway...

Imagine leaving your job in a sturdy trade with a great pension, all for the
shot of living your dream.  It's not a new story, but few are as real about it
as Tristan Horncastle.  A Favorite among Eastern Canadians, Tristan ventured out
west after getting some airplay in key markets - setting him up for what could
be a shot at the big time.

Now with a record deal, a new set of goals, and some great Travis Tritt
stories as well, get to know Tristan Horncastle!

Also this week, an apology for my computer, since it's being too much of a jerk to do it itself, Mom, and more!

MOAM Podcast - Episode 2 - Star Trek: The Next Generation's Marina Sirtis, Country Star Lindsay Ell

Picture
Mike on a Monday gets WAAAAY sexier with two brilliant and beautiful guests.

First off, after a completely fluke encounter, Mike got to sit down with Star Trek: The Next Generation Star Marina Sirtis to talk... MUSIC!  You may be surprised how much she knows about country, and who's on her playlist.  Guest #2 is a new star in country music, but as you'll hear, she's far from new to the scene.  Lindsay Ell is a guitar goddess and definitely a star in the making.  In their conversation, Mike and Lindsay talk about the challenges growing up wanting to be a musician, why a tour bus feels like home, and the importance of staying focused, as well as finger puppets.  Don't judge.
